The BASIC READING SERIES is divided into six levels — Levels A to F — with a reader and a workbook for each level. The BRS readers are broken into sections beginning with one or more lists of words having the same pattern and which can be learned together. In Levels A and B, the patterns consist of three-letter words formed as consonant-vowel-consonant. In addition, each section may introduce several exceptional (or “special”) words that do not belong to a pattern and must be learned by sight. Following the word lists are several stories and poems for the children to read. With each succeeding level, the word patterns and stories get more complex so that by Level F children can read and comprehend any selections using words in their oral vocabulary.
